While most skin warts are not necessarily dangerous, they can be unsightly, as well as uncomfortable depending on their location. Warts wartsare caused by a virus known as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can be contagious so it is important to seek treatment to prevent them from spreading to other areas of the body. The doctors at Deerfield Dermatology Associates are your experienced Deerfield, IL dermatologists for the treatment of all types of warts.

Types of Warts

There are different types of warts, including common warts, plantar or foot warts, and flat warts. Common warts tend to appear on the fingers or back of the hand. Plantar warts grow on the bottom of the feet and are likely to develop after walking around barefoot on unclean, damp surfaces, such as those in locker rooms and around public pools. Flat warts crop up on any area of the body and tend to be both smaller and smoother than common warts or foot warts. Flat warts also tend to crop up in clusters rather than as an isolated wart.

Treatments for Warts

Some types of warts can go away on their own, particularly in children. In other cases, treatment is necessary to eliminate the wart and prevent it from returning. Your Deerfield dermatologist can examine your warts and recommend the most effective treatment option. Possible treatments for warts include:

  • Over-the-counter ointments or medications
  • Prescription ointments
  • Prescription medication
  • Cryotherapy (freezing the wart off)
  • Electrosurgery (burning the wart off)
  • Laser cautery

In addition to the above treatments for warts, there are proactive measures you can take to prevent the warts from spreading. Since warts are contagious, it is important to avoid touching them. Otherwise, additional warts could crop up in other areas of the body. If you have plantar warts on the feet, avoid walking around barefoot on damp surfaces. Keep the feet clean and dry to prevent additional warts from developing.

If you struggle with warts anywhere on the face or body, there are treatments that can help. To schedule an appointment to discuss wart removal and treatment with a Deerfield, IL dermatologist, call Deerfield Dermatology Associates at (847) 480-0004.

Warts are hardened, bumpy areas of skin that can appear on several different skin surfaces, but most commonly on the hands, feet and even the face. While warts can be unsightly and unwanted, they are often harmless. However, if you have a wart that has not gone away with time or concerns you with its appearance, contact our Greenfield dermatologist office.

Warts appear due to the human papilloma virus (HPV). If a person touches a surface where HPV resides, and has a small cut or scratch, the virus can cause a wart to grow. For the most part, a wart will go away on its own. However, there are some at-home Wartsremedies that may help the wart go away. These include applying salicylic acid - the same kind that you use on an acne blemish. Soak your wart in warm water, dry the wart and apply a salicylic acid gel, liquid or pad for several weeks in a row to reduce the wart. Another option that may work in some instances is to apply a silver duct tape over the wart. Changing the tape regularly can help to remove the wart’s layers.

Sometimes you may require professional intervention at our Greenfield dermatologist’s office to remove the wart. This includes if the wart is painful or will not go away with at-home treatments. If you have many warts, you may also wish to seek treatment.

We offer many different treatment types for warts, and the appropriate treatment often depends upon the wart’s appearance and your overall health. Treatments include cryotherapy or freezing the wart, which causes the wart to fall off. Another treatment option is electrosurgery and curettage, which involves applying heat to burn the wart and using a small, sharp tool to cut the wart off.

Warts that are flat in nature may require a different approach. This includes laser treatments or special prescription medications to remove the wart. By seeking professional treatment, you can increase the likelihood the wart will ultimately go away.
