Acne is typically associated with teenagers, but the truth is that it can also be a problem for adults. Even if you have always had clear acneskin and never had to deal with acne in your teenage years, it can still become a problem later in life for a number of reasons, ranging from hormones to stress and other lifestyle factors. The dermatologists at Deerfield Dermatology Associates in Deerfield, IL offer a range of acne treatment and skin care options for adults and teenagers.

Acne breakouts range from mild to severe, and are most common on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders (but can technically occur anywhere on the body). Skin is covered in tiny pores. They are the openings to the hair follicles, and contain sebaceous glands that produce oils. Pores can become clogged and infected with bacteria, which causes outbreaks of pimples. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the most common types of pimples are:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Papules
  • Nodules
  • Pustules
  • Cysts

What Causes Acne?

Although some people may be more prone than others, anyone can develop a break out at any time. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Hormones (puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, birth control pills, and menopause)
  • Genetics and family history
  • Side effects from certain medications
  • Skin irritation from make up or other products

How is Acne Treated?

Many acne break outs are temporary and resolve on their own without treatment. However some forms, like cysts, can lead to scarring and should always be treated by a dermatologist in order to avoid permanent scars. Treatments will vary from person to person depending on a number of factors like the type of acne, the cause, individual skin type, and lifestyle factors. A dermatologist may recommend self care and a personalized cleansing routine, over the counter or prescription oral or topical medications, and lifestyle modifications.

Valentine’s Day Chocolate: A Sweat Treat Still Good to Eat

Although January is over, many patients are sticking with their New Year’s resolutions. For any resolution revolving around physical activity and health eating, there is one day when you can cheat a little—Valentine’s Day! Couples and singles all enjoy a little chocolate. We thought this would be the perfect time to discuss a popular topic—does chocolate cause acne? Deerfield dermatologists reveal some interesting facts. Deerfield Dermatology

Is Chocolate an acne-causing culprit?

For years people have debated about the topic of chocolate and possible skin problems. In recent years, it has been noted that chocolate isn’t a direct cause of acne. While milk chocolate is high in fat and sugar, a couple pieces of chocolate won’t make you break out.
In reality, acne and minor breakouts are caused by sebum, which is an oily substance produced by your skins sebaceous glands. This oily substance can clog the pores and attract bacteria, causing the skin to become inflamed.
What does this mean? In small amounts, specific sugary and fatty foods won’t cause acne. However, a high-sugar, high-fat diet can increase sebum production, spurring breakouts. It really depends on how much and how long you consume unhealthy snacks and food.

What about dark chocolate?

Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate contains a high content of cocoa, which provides antioxidants to the body. These antioxidants, such as the chemicals catechin and procyanidin, protect the body’s cells from free radicals, making it beneficial for your skin and cardiovascular system.
The moral of the story is that chocolate, especially on Valentine’s day, is a sweet treat that is still okay to eat—in moderation.
On another note, whether you have a date or not, if you want a quick pick me up, schedule an appointment with Deerfield Dermatology.
