Are you concerned about a new or changing mole?moles

Summer can be an exciting time. The weather is beautiful and it’s time to enjoy days in the sunshine. Of course, sporting those summer clothes also means that you are more likely to notice some new moles that have cropped up. Our Deerfield, IL, dermatologists are here to provide a little insight into what warning signs to look out for and when you should come in for a checkup.

If you have a family history of melanoma or skin cancer, or if you are starting to notice new moles, then it’s a good idea to perform a self-exam every month on yourself. If you don’t have these risk factors then it may be safe to do this every other month. When performing these skin exams, be on the lookout for these warning signs:

  • Moles that have a blurry, uneven, jagged or poorly defined border (healthy males will have a clearly defined and circular border)
  • Moles that are asymmetrical (meaning that one-half is not the same size or shape as the other half)
  • Moles that have more than one color (suspicious moles may have specks of brown, black, white, blue or red)
  • Moles that are larger than the eraser tip of a pencil
  • Moles that bleed, or are itchy or painful
  • Moles that have suddenly appeared (as opposed to moles that you’ve had all of your life)

One great way to continue to monitor how a suspicious mole is evolving is to snap some photos of it when you perform your next self-exam. In a month, come back to the mole and take some more photos. Then compare the images to see if there have been any changes to the color, shape or size. If you notice any changes then it’s time to see our Deerfield, IL, skin doctor right away for an evaluation. When in doubt, give us a call.

Deerfield Dermatology is dedicated to making sure you have healthy skin for years to come. Skin cancer is serious and potentially fatal if ignored. By coming into our Deerfield, IL, dermatology office once a year for a skin exam, you could just protect yourself against melanoma.
