Unfortunately, keeping your skin healthy and free of blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles can prove to be more difficult than it sounds. skin typeHowever, understanding the type of skin you have can help you find the best preventative skin routine for you. Find out how to determine your skin type with Deerfield Dermatology Associates in Deerfield, IL.

How can I tell what skin type I am?
You most likely have one of four types of skin:

  • Normal: Normal skin does not show any signs of being too oily or too dry. Your skin itself will feel smooth and even to the touch. Normal skin usually has pores which are unnoticeable.
  • Oily: Oily skin produces too much oil, often in the t-zone or the area of the forehead and down the nose. Oily skin appears shiny and greasy. Oily skin produces large pores which become easily clogged to form blackheads.
  • Dry: Dry skin often produces flakes and feels tight or too dry. Dry skin is usually worse during the dry, cold months of winter.
  • Combination: The most common type of skin, combination skin is usually oily in the t-zone and dry or normal in other areas. If you notice that your skin has more than two textures, you have combination skin. Pores are normally large around the t-zone and small or unnoticeable on the rest of the face.

Caring For Your Skin Type
One of the most important ways to care for your skin is to keep it clean and moisturized. Oily skin normally requires less moisturizer than dry skin, which tends to need moisturizer applied to it several times throughout the day. Combination skin may require moisturizer in some places of the face rather than others. Your dermatologist can help you determine the best skin care routine for you and your skin.
