Are you worried that skin cancer treatments will affect your appearance? Thanks to technological advancements, skin cancer surgery is skin cancermore precise than ever, resulting in smaller scars in many cases. The Deerfield, IL, dermatologists at Deerfield Dermatology Associates discuss skin cancer treatment options.

Skin cancer treatments

Treatment options vary depending on the type of severity of your cancer, but may include:

  • Cryosurgery: Freezing skin cells can be an effective way to destroy your cancer. During cryotherapy treatment, liquid nitrogen is applied to your skin. In the days after you leave our Deerfield office, the treated area will form a crust, which will eventually fall off, removing the cancerous cells.
  • Topical Medication: Applying strong topical medications to skin cancer can destroy more superficial types of cancer. The medication triggers the production of a natural body chemical that attacks and destroys cancerous cells. Topical medications are applied every day for several weeks.
  • Curettage and Electrodesiccation: After scraping away your tumor, your dermatologist heats the area with an electrocautery needle. The heat not only reduces bleeding but also destroys any cancerous cells that remain behind after the tumor is removed.
  • Excisional Surgery: During excisional surgery, your tumor is removed with a scalpel. Your doctor also removes a section of healthy skin surrounding the cancerous area. After the procedure, the tumor is sent to a laboratory. If cancer cells remain, you'll need to return for an additional excisional surgery procedure.
  • Mohs Surgery: Mohs surgery reduces scarring and the need for skin grafts by removing skin layer by layer. While you wait, the layer is examined under a microscope. If cancer cells remain, an additional layer will be removed. When there are no more signs of cancer, the surgery ends. Mohs surgery is most often used to treat squamous and basal cell skin cancers, although it may also be an effective treatment for melanoma, in some cases.
  • Radiation Therapy: No scalpels are needed with radiation therapy. Instead, cancerous cells are destroyed with high-energy radiation. If radiation therapy is recommended, you'll need multiple treatments to ensure that all cancer cells are destroyed.
