Skin exams offer a simple way to detect potentially deadly skin cancer. Divya Singh-Behl, M.D.; Marcia Johnson, M.D., Ph.D.; Jonathan Dalton, M.D.; and Madhuri Konanahalli, M.D.; your Deerfield dermatologists, are here to explain why these examinations are so important.

Why are skin exams important?

Skin cancer may seem like a less dangerous type of cancer, but it causes approximately 13,000 deaths per year, 10,000 of them from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Skin cancer is very treatable when it's detected in its earliest stages. Because changes in your skin can be subtle, and it can be difficult to see moles or growths on your back or other hard-to-reach places, skin exams in your dermatologist's office are an excellent way to safeguard your health.

Who has to worry about skin cancer?

Skin cancer can affect anyone who has ever spent any amount of time in the sun. Factors that can increase your risk include:

  • Fair skin
  • Weakened immune system due to a disease, conditions or immune suppression medications
  • Living in a sunny or high-altitude location
  • One or more blistering sunburns as a child or teenager
  • Frequent sun exposure
  • Use of tanning beds or tanning lights
  • A family history of skin cancer

How can I protect myself? Visit your Deerfield dermatologists.

Performing your own skin cancer check at least once a month is a good way to spot changes in your skin. Look for any mole or spot that changes color, size, thickness or texture, or develops an irregular border. Moles that are bigger than a pencil eraser should be evaluated by your dermatologist. Other possible signs of skin cancer include spots that hurt, itch bleed, scab or don't heal after a few weeks.

Yearly visits to your dermatologist are an excellent way to ensure that your skin stays healthy. During a skin examination, your doctor will look for suspicious spots over your entire body. If he or she notices any unusual looking spots, they'll be removed and biopsied.

Is it time for your next skin exam? Call Divya Singh-Behl, M.D.; Marcia Johnson, M.D., Ph.D.; Jonathan Dalton, M.D.; and Madhuri Konanahalli, M.D.; your Deerfield dermatologists, at (847) 480-0004 to schedule your next exam. Protect your skin with regular visits to your dermatologist.
