If you're worried about skin cancer, you have every right to be. Skin cancer is on the rise and doctors estimate that roughly half of all fair-skinned people who live into their sixties will develop skin cancer. But catching skin cancer early is one of the best ways to survive it. Pay attention to these signs and call your doctor right away if you are concerned about anything.Skin Cancer

Signs of Skin Cancer

  • Irregular Moles

Many moles are benign and perfectly harmless. But if you develop a mole that is unusually shaped, you should have it checked by a dermatologist. Other signs of a concerning mole are its color, the border, and size. Many moles may turn out to be nothing, but it's better to know than not.

  • Skin Lesions

Basal cell carcinoma may appear on the most sun-exposed areas of the face and neck. It can appear as a waxy bump or a flat, flesh-colored sore. Squamous cell carcinoma appears often in the face and hands and appears in the form of a red nodule or a scaly, crusty lesion.

  • Red and Purple Patches

Kaposi sarcoma causes red and purple patches on the skin because it develops within the blood vessels. This type of cancer is caused by human herpesvirus 8, and occurs most often in people with weakened immune systems.

  • Nodules

Merkel cell carcinoma and sebaceous gland carcinomas cause typically painless, hard nodules on the skin. Some develop in the hair follicles, while others develop on the eyelids, face, ears, or hands. Though it's more common for nodules to develop in the most sun-exposed regions, depending on the cancer they can develop anywhere on the body.

When dealing with any potential skin cancer, it's important to see a dermatologist. A dermatologist is a doctor specially trained in treating all types of skin conditions. The doctors at Deerfield Dermatology Associates offer skin exams and biopsies for those concerned about skin cancer. If you notice anything unusual about your skin, schedule an appointment today for early diagnosis and treatment. It could save your life!
