Summer isn’t the only time you need to focus on skin protection. Learn more from your Deerfield dermatologist.

Even though summer is over and fall weather is here, this doesn’t mean that it’s time to put away the sunscreen or that you can now beskin care more relaxed when it comes to your skincare regime. Every season brings with it some challenges that could affect the health of your skin so find out what our Deerfield, IL dermatologists recommend doing to keep skin looking its best throughout the year.

Fall

As the heat of summer gives way to drier and cooler weather, skin may start to lose moisture. But there is one benefit to the fall season: you now get the chance to try and repair some of the skin damage left over by the sun, water and pool chemicals of the summer:

  • Use an exfoliant and a moisturizer to remove dead skin cells and to rehydrate the skin. It’s always a great idea to apply moisturizer after your shower, when pores are open and best able to drink in more of the moisturizing ingredients.
  • You should also be moisturizing your lips. Use chapstick with an SPF everyday to prevent dry, cracked lips.
  • As air gets drier and colder it’s important that your skincare products reflect the change. Maybe you could get away with thin gels or lotions to moisturize your skin during the summer but with the fall air zapping your skin of moisture it’s a good idea to opt for a thicker cream.
  • Don’t forget about sunscreen. It may no longer be summer but you need to be applying this before going outside.

Winter

Old Man Winter can be pretty harsh and unyielding during these cold months. Now it’s more important than ever to wear layers to protect skin from the harsh frigid winds. Skin is more likely to become dry or cracked and beg for moisture. Wearing hats, gloves and long layers will help keep skin protected when going outdoors but it’s also important to find a thick, creamy moisturizer that will help replenish your dry skin after a shower.

Spring

It feels like forever since you were able to go outside and revel in the warmer weather. Now that spring is here it’s easy to want to spend more time outside, but this could spell trouble for your skin if you aren’t careful. Check your expiration date on your sunscreen. If it’s time to replace your old sunscreen look for one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Make sure to apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before going outside. Of course, one of the most popular questions is, “What SPF should I get?” We recommend an SPF of at least 20. Of course, those who are fair-skinned or burn easily may want to consider a higher SPF. But remember: it’s how you use it and reapply it that matters more than the number.

Make sure you are giving your skin the best care possible. Turn to our Deerfield, IL dermatology office today if you have questions about how to care for your skin or if you need to schedule an appointment.
