Valentine’s Day Chocolate: A Sweat Treat Still Good to Eat
Although January is over, many patients are sticking with their New Year’s resolutions. For any resolution revolving around physical activity and health eating, there is one day when you can cheat a little—Valentine’s Day! Couples and singles all enjoy a little chocolate. We thought this would be the perfect time to discuss a popular topic—does chocolate cause acne? Deerfield dermatologists reveal some interesting facts.

Is Chocolate an acne-causing culprit?
For years people have debated about the topic of chocolate and possible skin problems. In recent years, it has been noted that chocolate isn’t a direct cause of acne. While milk chocolate is high in fat and sugar, a couple pieces of chocolate won’t make you break out.
In reality, acne and minor breakouts are caused by sebum, which is an oily substance produced by your skins sebaceous glands. This oily substance can clog the pores and attract bacteria, causing the skin to become inflamed.
What does this mean? In small amounts, specific sugary and fatty foods won’t cause acne. However, a high-sugar, high-fat diet can increase sebum production, spurring breakouts. It really depends on how much and how long you consume unhealthy snacks and food.
What about dark chocolate?
Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate contains a high content of cocoa, which provides antioxidants to the body. These antioxidants, such as the chemicals catechin and procyanidin, protect the body’s cells from free radicals, making it beneficial for your skin and cardiovascular system.
The moral of the story is that chocolate, especially on Valentine’s day, is a sweet treat that is still okay to eat—in moderation.
