Understand more about skin cancer, its warning signs, and its treatment options.

Whether you are currently at risk for skin cancer or not, it’s important to understand how to properly safeguard your skin from developingSkin Cancer cancer as well as to know the early warning signs so that you can turn to our Deerfield, IL, dermatologists for care right away. Read on to learn the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on the subject!

Q. What are the different kinds of skin cancer?

A. There are three main types of skin cancer,

  • Basal cell carcinoma: This is the most common type of skin cancer and it’s most often found in areas of the body that are exposed to the sun such as the head.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: This skin cancer is also found in areas that are exposed to the sun such as the ears or face but can grow into a deeper layer in the skin and spread more easily than basal cell carcinomas.
  • Melanoma: This is a less common but serious and potentially life-threatening form of skin cancer.

Other types of skin cancer include Merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi sarcoma, and cutaneous lymphoma.

Q. What are some warning signs of skin cancer?

A. It’s important that you perform regular self skin-exams to check the health of your skin and to be able to pinpoint any changes that warrant visiting our Deerfield, IL, skin doctors. When it comes to determining whether or not a mole or growth is potentially cancerous it’s important to follow the ABCDEs:

  • Asymmetry: If you were to split the growth in half would both sides look identical? They should match up if the mole is healthy. When the sides look different this could be melanoma.
  • Border: Moles should have a clearly defined border. Melanoma often has a blurry, poorly defined, or crusted border.
  • Color: Healthy moles are only one color and can be different shades of brown. Any mole containing more than one color should be checked out.
  • Diameter: Moles that are greater than 6mm in diameter (the size of a pencil eraser) may often be warning signs of melanoma.
  • Evolving: Healthy moles stay relatively the same throughout your life. If a new growth or mole appears later in life or if a mole begins to change appearance, it’s time to see your dermatologist.

Other warning signs include,

  • A growth that won’t go away
  • Redness or swelling around the mole
  • A mole or growth that is painful, itchy, bleeding, or tender to the touch

Q. How can I prevent skin cancer?

A. The number one way to reduce your risk for skin cancer is to wear a full-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every time that you are going to be in the sun for an extended period. Apply a generous amount to your face and body about 30 minutes before going outside. Remember to reapply immediately after sweating or swimming.

Other ways to prevent skin cancer include,

  • Wearing protective clothing when outdoors including sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
  • Avoiding the sun during peak hours (from 10am-4pm)
  • Performing self-exams every month
  • Visiting a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin cancer screening
