Is acne harming your child's self-esteem? Unfortunately, this inflammatory skin condition typically happens in adolescence and mars the Acneskin with characteristic blemishes called comedones. Your four board-certified dermatologists at Deerfield Dermatology Associates treat children who suffer from acne, giving them clearer skin and a more positive outlook.

What is acne?

Combining infection with inflammation, acne blemishes originate in the skin pores of the face, throat, chest and back. Pores contain both hair follicles and oil producing glands. When the oil, or sebum, becomes trapped due to dirt and skin cell debris, reddened papules form. Open papules, or comedones, are black because of a pigment called melanin. Closed comedones are whiteheads because the oil obstructs the pore, leaving the blemish white to red in color.

Acne tends to run in families and seems affected by androgens, or hormones. That's why your pre-teen child or teen (and pregnant and menopausal women) may develop frequent acne outbreaks and require treatment at Deerfield Dermatology Associates.

The American Academy of Dermatology says that preventing or limiting outbreaks helps avoid:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Areas of deep pigmentation
  • Emotional difficulties
  • More invasive treatments and stronger pharmaceuticals later in life

Treating acne

The first step is an in-office consultation with one of our physicians. They will inspect the areas of the outbreak and recommend a treatment plan suited to your child's age and overall health. Very mild cases of acne may need more directed hygiene habits (mild soap and water twice a day and no squeezing of blemishes) while other may require continual intervention with:

  • Over the counter or prescription medications and washes containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or other active ingredients
  • Oral or topical antibiotics to quell infection
  • Chemical peels (for moderate acne consisting of blackheads)
  • In-office surgical extraction of acne cysts

Whether your child has grade one (the mildest) or grade four (the most severe) acne, persistence and patience are key to successful treatment. In other words, your pre-teen or teen must stick with his or her skin regimen to enjoy the clearest skin possible.

Look and feel better

That's the aim of acne treatment at Deerfield Dermatology Associates. Please call the office for an appointment. Phone (847) 480-0004.

Acne can be a challenging problem but there is an effective treatment out there for you!

Acne happens to most people at some point during their lives. While many people think acne is reserved for those formidable teen acne treatmentyears only, you’d be surprised how many adults still deal with acne. No matter your age, if you are dealing with the common skin problem then it’s time to talk to one of our Deerfield dermatologists about your options.

At-Home Care

Good skin care starts at home. While there are certainly treatments and medications your skin doctor in Deerfield, IL can prescribe, here are some handy tips for how to eliminate your acne through personal care:

While you should certainly wash your skin daily it’s important not to over wash. Limit yourself to no more than twice a day, as washing more often can make acne symptoms worse.

Always choose a mild face wash and warm (but not hot!) water for washing your skin. Water that is too hot can also exacerbate your acne.

Don’t pick at your skin. While it might be tempting to squeeze pimples, doing so could scar your skin. If you need to have acne extracted come into our Deerfield, IL dermatological office for a proper extraction.

Wear non-comedogenic makeover and sunscreen, which is less likely to block your pores. If you wear makeup, limit how much you use and how often you use it.

Seeing your Dermatologist

Even while incorporating these tips into our daily routine don’t expect acne to change overnight. It may take a couple weeks to see results. If you don’t notice a change in your acne outbreaks here are some ways we can help:

We can prescribe certain medications like antibiotics, topical retinoids, oral contraception (for hormone-related acne outbreaks) or Isotretinoin.

Those with severe acne may take a combination of antibiotics and topical medications to reduce the severity and frequency of their outbreaks. If these treatments aren’t successful, the next step is to prescribe Isotretinoin medication.

Just like with at-home skin care, it can take up a couple months before your treatments take their full effect. While it can be frustrating it’s important to stay patient and to continue taking your medication. Trust us; you will see results, it may just take a month or more.

Acne doesn’t have to take over your life. Before it starts to affect both your appearance and your quality of life turn to the expert dermatological team at Deerfield Dermatology Associates to get the results you’ve been looking for.

In addition to growing wiser, one of the benefits of getting older is supposed to be freeing yourself from acne blemishes. However, many Deerfield patients do not experience this benefit and continue to have acne breakouts throughout their adult years. Some Acne Treatmentpatients even begin to experience acne in their 30's and beyond, even if they did not have acne as teenagers.

Our Deerfield dermatologists are highly accustomed to treating adult acne, and embarrassment should not keep any patient away from seeking care. One of the first steps is to identify what causes in a person’s life could be leading to adult acne. These include:

  • family history of acne breakouts
  • fluctuating hormone levels, especially for women
  • hair or skincare products that contain oils
  • side effect of a medical condition, such as polycystic ovary syndrome
  • side effect of medications
  • stress

One or more of these causes can combine to cause adult acne. If you have tried over-the-counter products such as benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid, yet nothing has cleared your acne, it may be time to make an appointment with Deerfield Dermatology Associates.

Adult acne may require stronger treatments available only by prescription as well as a combination of treatments to be most effective. As adult acne sufferers well know, adult acne can be especially stubborn to treat. Examples of prescription treatments our Deerfield dermatologists may prescribe include antibiotics to kill off acne-causing bacteria, retinol creams to encourage cell turnover and un-clog pores and/or laser treatments to kill bacteria in pores. Even making small changes to your skincare routine, may also help clear skin. With a thorough evaluation, our dermatologists can help you determine the best treatment options.
